“The League needs a new leader.” To pronounce what sounds like a sentence against Matteo Salvini was Umberto Bossi in Gemonio (Varese) on the occasion of the celebration for the 40th anniversary of the Carroccio. “We need a new leader who goes in the direction of autonomy, who puts the northern question back at the center.” Because, he said again, “I don’t think Salvini has shown attention” to these issues. And to those who tried to press him on the replacement, quoting the Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti, he replied: “He’s a good guy, but I won’t say anything otherwise they’ll massacre him. However, regarding the current leader of the League he also said: “I don’t want to talk about Salvini, he took his own path. When one loses the way, ideas move forward on the legs of men and evidently we cannot take the path we have taken again,” he added. “I didn’t hear it. I expected him to appear without saying anything.”
Then, meeting the militants, he continued: “Today I am very happy, I saw a lot of people that I hadn’t seen for years, it’s the League of 40 years ago”, he said. “Salvini has taken his own path, everyone takes their own path, it takes a bit of head. The League of the time was rooted in the popular base, in the council in Varese they spoke in dialect. If the roots are strong, it is difficult for them to stop. We certainly made a great effort, it was a different world, there was a need for something new and anyone with political intuition would have understood it. Finally, Bossi spoke about the first years of the party’s foundation: “The best memory? When we went to the Po, Calderoli still keeps the ampoules.” To Bossi, Marco Reguzzoni he brought a bottle of wine to accompany the chocolate cake with the writing ‘Dear Umberto we love you’ and the ambulance driver who helped Senatur when he suffered a stroke in 2004 also attended the party.
