The charm ofexorcism at the cinema always remains unchanged, a trend that has been fully exploited byhorror and which always seems to have fertile ground. We have therefore chosen five themed films that you absolutely must see.
Let’s go in order of release and obviously start with one of the great masterpieces of horror and cinema in general: The Exorcist by William Friedkin. Timeless, essential, simply perfect in every way. And do you know what painting inspired one of the most iconic scenes in The Exorcist?
We want to put also The Exorcist III by William Peter Blatty, a true spiritual sequel to Friedkin’s film, greatly re-evaluated over time and which takes place approximately fifteen years after the original film. Give him (or give him back) a chance, you won’t regret it.
Let’s then move on to The Exorcism of Emily Rose by Scott Derricksoninspired by a real-life news story, capable of mixing legal thrillers with the supernatural.
If you want a mix of found footage and exorcisms, here it is Daniel Stamm’s Last Exorcismwhich uses the documentary technique to tell the whole story.
We close with The Wailing (Also known as Goksung – The presence of the devil) by Na Hong-jin, capable of mixing different elements of horror very well, not just exorcism, for a film that won over audiences and critics.
