Kevin Costner Was High on Morphine on the Set of His Hit: “I Wanted to Cry”

In the week that the first chapter of Horizon: An American Saga debuted in U.S. theaters, the actor/director Kevin Costner recalls a particularly difficult moment in his career.

The episode told to PEOPLE magazine dates back to the filming of Hidden Figures: the 2016 film directed by Theodore Melfi was based on the book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly and told the true story of the three American scientists who played a key role within NASA, during the space race. In the feature film nominated for 3 Oscars (here you can find our review of Hidden Figures), Kevin Costner plays Al Harrison, a fictional character who in the film is the head of the group of mathematicians that the protagonists join.

Costner recalls suffering from kidney stones during that time, but still persisted in not missing a single day of work: “I worked on a drip for 10 days. I don’t even know how. For about three days I felt normal, then something happened.“. The actor, known for being particularly reliable when it comes to commitment on set, says: “I’ve never been drunk on a set or under the influence of any substance, but the last two weeks I worked on that film I was on morphine.“. The star recalls that, between scenes, he sat in his trailer with an IV drip, so much so that he was forced to cover his arm during filming. “I wanted to cry, but everyone was looking at me, so I didn’t.“. Despite the difficulties, Costner is proud of the work done: “It was magical“, he said, recalling in particular the professionalism of director Theodore Melfi.
