Let’s face it: you don’t need to be a Trading Card Game enthusiast to be amazed by it Lorcana. Since the first illustrations published online, the card game starring Disney characters has proven to have its own identity, translating the styles of the various animated products and giving a sort of uniformity to the project. The result can also be seen in the various illustrations scattered throughout this article. Illustrations with captivating designs and bright colours, which in some cases even surpass (or rather “update”) the design of the original material.
It’s been almost a year since the release of “The First Chapter”, the first wave of content released in August 2023. A publication which, however, did not interest Italy, which was thus left orphaned of the first (and second) tranche of papers. Fortunately, starting in February 2024, the third expansion titled “In the Lands of Ink” it also reached our country thanks to Ravensburger. The passion for Disney products has therefore also spread among Italian card players, who have reacted with extreme interest to Lorcana. A continued interest also in the new expansion, available for a few weeks and dedicated to the evil Ursula.
In recent weeks we have been able to test first-hand the quality of this new set of cards, accompanied by what is, all things considered, the main novelty of the expansion: a cooperative mode. Despite Lorcana remains a TCG (Trading Card Game), with this addition it takes a direction closer to the LCG (Living Card Game), thus allowing players to use pre-constructed decks to face the sea witch in battle. Are you ready to find out why, in our opinion, Lorcana Is it the game that should not be missing from the toy library of every self-respecting Disney enthusiast?
ADVENTURE OF THE ILLUMINATORS – TROUBLE IN THE DEEP
As already mentioned, Lorcana is a card game that sees players create a deck of sixty cards and then face each other in battle. What differentiates the Ravensburger product from the never praised enough Magic: The Gathering, however, lies in the different objective of the game, that is, reaching a certain score without focusing exclusively on destroying the opponent’s cards. Added to this variation is also the possibility of playing competitive games with multiple players, without limiting yourself to the classic 1VS1 or 2VS2.
With “Trouble in the Depths”, Lorcana takes a further leap in quality by introducing a cooperative mode. Players can then team up to fight Ursula in exciting battles across four difficulty levels. Battles that boast new rules, new mechanics and a prize up for grabs if you win. Defeating the sea witch, in fact, will allow us to open a golden envelope inside the package to unlock a splendid reward. A reward that not only will we not tell you, but which the authors have asked not to spread on the web precisely to preserve the satisfaction felt once the challenge has been won.
We don’t hide it: we loved this new mode and hope that it is just the beginning of a series of expansions capable of carrying on the “lore” of Lorcana. What is certain is that we are faced with yet another excellent intuition of a card game in constant growth, which does not limit itself to reiterating the same contents, but is truly eager to bring a breath of fresh air into the world of Trading Card Game .
HOW TO GET CLOSE TO LORCANA WHILE WAITING FOR THE SUMMER
You’ve always been passionate about Disney films, but you don’t know how to approach them Lorcana? Fortunately Ravensburger has thought of you too. Along with the aforementioned cooperative mode, “The Return of Ursula” also saw the arrival two Starter Decksdesigned for those who are not familiar with creating the various gaming decks and who are approaching TCGs for the first time. We are talking about two 60-card decks, also containing damage tokens, a rulebook, a paper mat to keep track of the points and an extra pack with 12 random cards inside. All at a price of approx twenty euro.
Although there are characters from different Disney worlds, most of the cards in these two decks are dedicated to Encanto, Frozen and Hercules. The goal of these Starter Decks is to teach players the basics, to then push them to customize their own decks with the characters found in the various single packs. A gradual entry into the world of card games, which should push players to want to create different Decks based on different combinations. Finally, as is right, you will also find the various sachets in specialized shops. Each of them contains six common cards, three uncommon cards, two rare (or super rare or legendary) cards and one foil (shiny) card of random rarity. This is an above average number of cards compared to the various TCGs on the market and which we cannot fail to appreciate.
THE RETURN OF URSULA, MORE THAN AN EXPANSION, IS A CONFIRMATION
From players of Lorcana for a few months we found this new expansion very well balanced and able to offer numerous new synergies between the cards. Additional content after additional content, the card game starring Disney characters is proving to be increasingly interesting. A true statement both from an aesthetic and purely recreational point of view. The introduction of new skills and, above all, the presence of an unprecedented cooperative mode are only confirmation of the goodness inherent in Lorcana. After all, we are talking about a card game that, since its first expansion, has been able to put brilliant ideas into play, without aiming to simply imitate the big names in the sector. In short: Lorcana is becoming more and more synonymous with “fun” and “fantasy”. A result that we hope to see extended to future expansions, arriving in the coming months.
