The universe of Blade Runner continues to grow. After the original film by Ridley Scott released in 1982, which immediately became a fundamental cult of the science fiction genre, and after the sequel Blade Runner 2049 of 2017 in which Harrison Ford passed the baton to Ryan Gosling, the saga will continue with further expansion, but this time on a serial level. In fact, it’s called Blade Runner 2099 the series created by Amazon Mgm Studios and destined to arrive in streaming soon on Prime Video. It is a sequel to both films, although the plot is kept under wraps for now the strictest confidentiality. However, in recent times up to the last few hours, important news has arrived regarding casting.
In fact, it has been known for some time that the list of actors involved in this episodic sequel would be led Michelle Yeoh: the actress of The tiger and the dragon, Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Everything Everywhere All At Once she is not new to the small screen, having participated in serial projects such as The Witcher: Blood Origin, Star Trek: Discovery, American Born Chinese, The Brothers Sun; now he will join this new franchise in the role – apparently – of Olwena replicant approaching the end of her life.
In recent hours, however, participation in the same series has been confirmed Hunter Schafer: The actress became famous for playing the role of transgender teenager Jules Vaughn in the series Euphoria but we recently saw it at the cinema in The Hunger Games: The Rime of the Serpent and the Nightingale and is currently in theaters with Kind of Kindness by Yorgos Lanthimos. For now it is not known what will be the role and destiny of Schafer in the new series, but considering that so far we have always focused on male pairs of mentor and pupil, it is possible that his figure is closely linked to the one played by Yeoh.
It was just the same Ridley Scott to announce the construction of Blade Runner 2099 in November 2021, with Amazon acquiring the project in early 2022. Taking care of the series as showrunner and executive producer, together with Scott, David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger, will be Silka Luisa (Shining Girls). Filming of the series, initially scheduled for summer 2023, was postponed due to last year’s actors’ and screenwriters’ strike but has resumed in these months in Prague. No precise debut date has been announced yet.
