The father of Game of Thrones George RR Martin “reviewed” Furious by George Miller on the pages of his blog.

With a cost of 168 million (excluding P&A) and a gross of only 144 million worldwide, Furious it proved to be a significant blow for the company Warner as much as for the legendary director George Miller so much so that, at this point, it is difficult to hypothesize that the saga will continue.

That said, speaking of Furious from the pages of his blog, George Martin he expressed himself thus:

I saw Furiosa last week on an Imax screen. The last Mad Max movie… although, strangely, without Mad Max. I don’t think there’s a better action director than George Miller. The fights in Furiosa are spectacular, especially when viewed on an Imax screen.

Obviously, Miller had a much bigger budget this time. I think the first Mad Max was made with coins he found between his couch cushions. Furiosa probably cost more than the first four Max films combined. Given its narrative structure, it could easily have become five films, or three seasons of a television series. I liked Anya Taylor-Joy, who played Furiosa this time. The girl who played Furiosa as a child was also good. I liked Tom Burke (Praetorian Jack) and Chris Hemsworth as Dementus… and the Citadel is a fantastic set, although it was used to more impact in Fury Road.

Overall, though, Mad Max 2 still remains my favorite film of the saga. Furiosa and Fury Road both have their merits, but I still rank them below the second and third films starring Mel Gibson. The new ones are bigger and more expensive, and the action scenes are huge… but the world building, side characters and stories can’t compare.

Then he adds:

And I miss endings. The final scenes of Mad Max 2 and Beyond Thunderdome are beautifully written and make me cry every time I see them. I love the bittersweet flavor of those epilogues. In both cases, Max is left alone, standing on the street… which fits the character presented in the first film, the loner so devastated by the death of his wife and son that he no longer wants to be part of any community. He doesn’t want to be a hero (as Aunty Entity sings in Beyond Thunderdome), he doesn’t want to love again (and maybe lose again), but there’s still a residue of the cop that was buried inside him, and he finds himself however dragged into heroism.

The film starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Alyla Browne and Tom Burke has been in Italian cinemas since May 23.
