The plot of The Sympathizer
The Sympathizer is described as a spy thriller with ironic notes and a strong intercultural connotation. It is also a satirical story about the efforts made by a communist spy, half French and half Vietnamese, during the last days of the Vietnam War and his subsequent exile in Los Angeles, where he begins working on the set of a film about the Vietnam War , but discovers that his days as a spy are not over. The series is an HBO, A24 and Rhombus Media co-production, produced in association with Moho Film and Cinetic Media.
The cast
Hoa Xuande (Cowboy Bebop) plays the spy at the center of the story and the cast also includes Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy, Killing Eve) as a feminist who begins to awaken to the complexity of her Asian American identity, as well as Fred Nguyen Khan (Mother!), Toan Le (Bigfoot), Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen And Alan Trong. Robert Downey Jr. plays several supporting roles, all antagonists representing different faces of the American establishment: an American congressman, a CIA agent, and a Hollywood director, among others.
Park Chan-wook (Old Boy, Decision to Leave) is co-showrunner, executive producer, writer and director (episodes 1-3); Don McKellar is co-showrunner, executive producer and writer; Robert Downey Jr. is executive producer and star, Susan Downey she is executive producer together with Amanda Burrell for Team Downey, Niv Fichman for Rhombus Media, Kim Ly, Ron Schmidt, Viet Thanh Nguyen (also author of the book), Jisun Back for Moho Film. Also directing are Fernando Meirelles (episode 4) and Marc Munden (episodes 5-7). Mark Richard, Naomi Iizuka, Maegan Houang, Anchuli Felicia King, Tea Ho are writers of the series.
