The figure of the secret agent in cinema has always had its charm and success. In addition to the best-known James Bond, over the years there has been a series of characters belonging to the world of espionage and secret services. Among the most popular recent films in this regard is included Kingsman – The Golden Circle (review here), directed by Matthew Vaughn in 2017 and sequel to Kingsman – Secret Service. The protagonists of this are the Kingsman, a group of agents who embody the ways and principles of the modern knight, intervening in situations of serious crisis on a global level.
The story is loosely based on the comic miniseries of the same title The Secret Servicepublished between 2012 and 2013 by Mark Millarwith illustrations by the well-known Dave Gibbonsfamous for his work on Watchmen. The desire to make a film from Millar’s series was born from a conversation he had with director Vaughn. In fact, the two wanted to make a spy film that would contrast with the seriousness too often found in such works. With Kingsman, instead, the intention was to create a transgressive and fun work.
With the actors from the first film returning to their respective roles, and new performers playing new characters, Kingsman – The Golden Circle it established itself as a major success. Against a budget of around 104 million dollars, the film managed to gross 410 million dollars overall. This result pushed Fox to put a third chapter into production, expected in theaters soon. Before this, however, the Kingsman will return to the cinema with a prequel that will allow us to further explore this narrative world. One year after saving the world by foiling Richmond Valentine’s plan, Eggsy Unwin he is now for all intents and purposes a member of the Kingsman agency under the code name of Galahad. His love life also enjoys a particularly happy moment, as he is engaged in a relationship with Tilde, Princess of Sweden, known following a rescue. The young man’s tranquility, however, is abruptly interrupted by the attack of Charlie Hesketh, a former candidate for the agency who was seriously impaired. The latter, seeking revenge, manages to sneak into the Kingsman servers, stealing precious information. These are then resold by him to the wicked woman Poppy Adams.
This is the leader of the largest drug cartel in the world, called “The Golden Circle”. To make sure she has no obstacles from them, the woman has several missiles launched on the headquarters, destroying everything and also killing several agents. Having survived the explosion, Eggsy manages to escape together with Merlin and the two activate the emergency protocol known as “Doomsday”. To save the world again, the Kingsman will need allies this time, and they will find these in their American counterpart: the Statesman. With the agents Champagne, Whiskey, Tequila And Ginger they will be able to organize themselves to launch a response attack on the evil drug trafficker.
The cast of the film
To bring the sequel to life, the producers made use of the return of the actors who made the first film successful. The first among these is Taron Edgerton, who has become a real star, reprising his role as Eggsy here. Once again, the actor underwent months of physical training to be able to personally interpret the most complex scenes of the film. Near him, Colin Firth reprises his role as Agent Hart, while Mark Strong it is Merlin, who has a particularly larger role here than in the previous film. The Oscar winner then makes her appearance in the film Julianne Moore in the role of the villain Poppy Adams. The actress said that she worked a lot to build the character of her character, and that she based herself in particular on the Lex Luthor present in the film Superman from 1978.
The film also features a series of new performers, who give life to characters who are only now becoming part of the story. The first of these is Champagne, head of the Statesman, played by the Oscar winner Jeff Bridges. Next to him, in the role of better agents than him, there are Channing Tatum interpreter of Tequila, the Oscar winner Halle Berry as Ginger e Pedro Pascalnow known for the series The Mandalorian as Whiskey. He is also present in the film Michael Gambonfamous for the role of Albus Dumbledore in the saga of Harry Potter, who here plays Arthur, leader of the Kingsman. Finally, there is also a cameo by the singer Elton Johnwho appears as himself.
Given the great success of this sequel at the box office, Fox has declared itself interested in continuing the events of the now famous and appreciated Kingsman agency. A third chapter is therefore currently being worked on, which will thus bring the trilogy of main films to completion. Before this, however, the film arrived at the cinema in 2021 The King’s Man – The origins. This is the first prequel of the saga, and is set during the Second World War, narrating the birth of the title organization. The protagonist of the film is the actor Ralph Fiennes.
