Sardinia, the case of the “eco-monster” built for the marriage of the prince of Jordan Al Hussein

Sardinia, the case of the “eco-monster” built for the marriage of the prince of Jordan Al Hussein
Descriptive text here

In front of the island of Tavolara, where the turquoise waters blend with the limestone mountain and uncontaminated nature, a huge white shed has made its appearance. About 70 meters wide, thirty deep and 15 high. In a protected area, and without the green light from the Municipality or the Superintendence, as specified by the Corriere della Sera. The preparation, which took place in a few hours, has an explanation: it will be destined for the wedding party of the son of the king of Jordan, Al Hussein, with a very rich Saudi heiress, Rajwa al Saif, scheduled for the next few days. The matter was kept under the strictest secrecy until an environmentalist photographed the eco-monster. Which, they promise, will only be temporary.

What the law says

The sheikhs’ passion for the Costa Smeralda, as for its surroundings in the north-east of Gallura, is in fact now well known. But it seems insufficient to justify what Gianantonio Stella defines as “a white stone in the eye of the Italians”. And the fear is that it will end up like other structures set up in Italy, which should have been temporary but ended up remaining where they weren’t supposed to for decades. To open the legislative glimmer for the construction of the work in question would have been the use of Letter F of the second paragraph of the art. 15 of the Sardinian regional law of 23 October 1985.

Where “objectively precarious works aimed at satisfying objective exceptional, contingent and temporally determined needs, even lasting more than one hundred and twenty days, such as to be able to be removed immediately when the need ceases, would be permitted”. But according to the Legal Intervention Group (GrIG), sheds of this kind in areas of very high landscape and naturalistic importance would not be included. President Stefano Deliperiin the request for access to the documents presented yesterday evening and sent to the government, the ministers of culture and landscape, the region of Sardinia, the superintendencies and the prosecutor’s office, expressly requested “the copy of the authorization documents and the provisions adopted following the investigations » that should have been done.

No warnings

In fact, it seems that no request to start the works has been presented to the landscape superintendency of Sassari. Nor to the mayor of Loiri-Porto San Paolo in whose municipal area the shed was built, Francesco Lai. It would only have been explained to him that it could be a great opportunity, but it had to remain confidential. The only request: the concession for one month of public parking in the Cala Finanza area. Which the mayor, however, denied. The party is expected on June 10th. Immediately after that date, the mayor has already announced, «everything must be dismantled. Even if I have to go there with the wrench, bolt by bolt».
