Naples, 1 July 2024 – From 2 to 5 July, the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Naples will host the European Coral Reef Symposium (ECRS), the most important European event on the study and conservation of coral and coralligenous reefs on our Planet. The ECRS aims to pursue in Europe the mission and objectives of the International Coral Reef Society (ICRS), including the dissemination and acquisition of knowledge to ensure the protection of coral reefs for future generations.

This is an event that is held every four years on rotation in a European country. For this year’s edition, Italy and Naples will have the honor of hosting it. The main theme will be how to bridge the knowledge gap between tropical coral reefs, temperate ones like in the Mediterranean and cold water ones like in northern Europe.

The symposium, chaired by Prof. Massimo Ponti of the University of Bologna and Prof. Carlo Cerrano of the Polytechnic University of Marche, will bring together scientists, researchers, environmentalists, policy makers and coral reef managers from 60 countries around the world. It will be an important opportunity to present the latest research results and exchange current knowledge that is essential to advise international and national policies in the conservation and sustainable use of these delicate marine ecosystems, which play a fundamental role in the ecological and climatic balances of our Planet.

Laura Nuñez Pons (Researcher in the Integrated Marine Ecology Section and member of the Scientific Committee), Ulisse Cardini (Researcher in the Integrated Marine Ecology Department) and Nuria Teixido (Researcher in the Integrated Marine Ecology Section), scientists of the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station, will be chairs of two of the 13 scheduled sessions. The event includes, among other things, the holding of workshops and guided visits to the Aquarium and the Darwin-Dohrn Museum.
