Built in 1715 by order of Francesco Ferdinando Gravina, Prince of Palagonia, the villa is famous for its bizarre and grotesque decorations. The name “Villa dei Mostri” comes from the numerous grotesque statues and sculptures that adorn the garden and walls of the villa. These figures represent monstrous creatures, fantastic animals and human caricatures, creating a surreal and fairy-tale atmosphere.
In addition to the external sculptures, the villa features baroque architecture with richly decorated interiors. The frescoes, stucco decorations and antique furnishings offer an extraordinary example of the aesthetic taste of the 18th century. Bagheria is known as the “City of Villas” due to the presence of numerous noble residences built between the 17th and 18th centuries.
These villas represent an architectural and cultural heritage of great value. Another notable villa in Bagheria is Villa Valguarnera, built in 1712. The villa is surrounded by a large park and features elegant baroque architecture. In addition to its historic villas, Bagheria is also home to Villa Cattolica, which today is home to the Guttuso Museum.
