Brindisi, new beds ready in intensive care but no electricity for machines

BRINDISI – The story of the new Intensive Care Unit at the Perrino hospital, almost completed but unusable because there is no electricity to run the machinery, is gaining national media attention.

Work on the fifth floor of the Brindisi hospital began in 2022. After accumulated delays on the timetable, work on block “D1” has finally ended. Work on block “D0” is currently nearing completion. At least two-thirds of the 23 planned beds would therefore be usable, if it were not for the fact that the work planned to upgrade the hospital’s electrical cabin was contracted out separately and is currently facing delays.

Speaking on «Mattino Cinque», a Mediaset broadcast, the director of the technical management area of the ASL of Brindisi, Sergio Maria Rini, explained that «the construction site for the new department is still open: when fully operational, 23 treatment beds will be available intensive, in addition to the 16 already existing”.

The Perrino hospital, however, “is already equipped – underlined Rini – to guarantee 24 beds: two blocks are on the fifth floor, another block can be used on the eighth floor”.

Regarding the delays in the works, Rini clarified that they are linked to organizational problems and above all “to the fact that an area where the works were carried out was already used for other services”.

But how will the main problem be solved, namely that of the lack of energy to operate the machinery serving the 23 new beds? “The works for the electrical substation – Director Rini pointed out – are part of another intervention that we have already started some time ago in order to implement the supply of electricity for the entire Perrino”. Times? Sine die. We will see.
