Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July 2024, a weekend full of initiatives at the Festiona Cross-Country Skiing Centre (via Chiardola, 1) in Valle Stura, thanks to the proposals of the Meran project – Maintenance and recovery of naturalistic area. Saturday, at 10 am, we start with the collection of wild herbs in the woods accompanied by a professional herbalist, with the possibility, at the end of the route, of having lunch at the restaurant of the Cross-Country Skiing Centre. Also on Saturday, from 2:30 pm to 6 pm and, again, on Sunday from 9 am to 12:30 pm, the experts of Grandalpi will conduct a free theoretical-practical lesson on the techniques of building dry stone walls. On Sunday at 4 pm, instead, the free initiative dedicated to families will be held “Il paese delle Meranviglie”, an orienteering game widespread in the village of Festiona. Finally, from 7:30 pm on Sunday, the restaurant of the Cross-Country Skiing Centre offers the “Summer BBQ A L’Ubac”. “Let’s not call them weeds! Collecting wild herbs” is the title of the trek accompanied by a professional herbalist, to learn about and collect the herbs of the forest. The meeting is at 10 am at the Cross Country Centre for an activity of about 2 and a half hours, the minimum age suggested is 8 years. Appropriate clothing, trekking shoes and a reusable bag for the collection are recommended. To enjoy the fruits of the collection, it is possible to have lunch at the restaurant of the Cross Country Centre À L’Ubac, upon reservation.

The initiative “Dry stone walls: practical and educational demonstration”, curated by Grandalpi – the Agroforestry Cooperative of the Alps of the Sea, includes a theoretical-practical lesson on the construction techniques of this form of rural art linked to the traditions of the Stura Valley. The activity will take place on Saturday, from 2:30 pm and, again, on Sunday, from 9 am, and will address the following aspects: the different types and functions, preparation for construction, choice of material and demonstration of installation. Comfortable clothing and closed shoes are recommended. The initiative is reserved for those over 16 years of age.

“Il paese delle Meranviglie” is a trekking game spread throughout the town of Festiona, to discover the natural corners, culture and history of this splendid place, in the company of a nature guide. During the journey, participants will compete in tests to overcome and clues to connect. The activity is suitable for adults and children. The meeting is scheduled for Sunday, July 14, at 4 pm, at the Centro Fondo Festiona. For more information, write to [email protected]. To participate in the initiatives, membership to the ASD is required at a cost of 5 euros, to be done on site by showing up 20 minutes before the start of the activity or by writing to [email protected] and paying on the same day.

Finally, upon reservation, the Restaurant of the Festiona Cross Country Ski Centre is offering the “Summer Grill A L’Ubac” on Sunday 14 July, from 7:30 pm, at a price of 20 euros for adults (appetizer, grill and tart) and 10 euros for children under 10 (chips, Milanese and tart), drinks not included.

The Meran project, Maintenance and Recovery of Natural Areas, was conceived by the Asd Rucias Bianc of Festiona in collaboration with the Municipality of Demonte, the Unione Montana Valle Stura, the AIB Team and Civil Protection of Demonte, the Asd Valle Stura Sport, Sideralis Aps and created with the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation as part of the Call for Proposals “Sportspeople for Nature – Physical activity and green culture for health and the territory”.
