Euro 2024: Italy-Switzerland, extra time and penalties ahead

A less than brilliant Italy managed to overcome a very dangerous group stage, finding itself once again against Switzerland in an official match after the recent previous ones dating back to 2021, with three matches. An Italian success in the last European Championships and two very painful draws marked by penalties missed by Jorginho for Italy which cost them the World Cup.

The match between Switzerland and Italy will be the first challenge of the eighth-round circle, in a very balanced match. The Swiss are very confident in their abilities, having a block structured for several years now and full of experienced and quality players, used to playing together. Let’s see the numbers of the challenge scheduled for today at 18 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

Euro 2024, Switzerland-Italy: the numbers

Switzerland qualified as second in group A, the one also containing Germany (1-1), Scotland (1-1) and Hungary (3-1). Three matches in which two experts from our Serie A showed off: Ndoye and Freuler, with important and decisive performances for the balance of the team.
In Switzerland’s last four matches, both teams have scored. Curiously, Switzerland’s last two eliminations at the European Championships came on penalties, after they drew 1-1 in extra time.
It may take longer than the usual 90 minutes to decide the winner, as Italy have also faced extra time in two of their last three post-group matches in this competition.

Euro 2024, Switzerland-Italy: the prediction

At least one goal is expected from both sides, with the Azzurri starting as slight favourites, especially given how their last match ended. Zaccagni’s goal may have given that emotional plus that Spalletti’s boys lacked during their latest performances. We opt for a 2-1 Italy in extra time or a possible victory on penalties.

Euro 2024, Switzerland-Italy: probable formations

SVIZZERA (3-4-2-1): Sommer; Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez; Stergiou, Freuler, Xhaka, Aebischer; Ndoye, Vargas; Embolo. All.: Yakin.
ITALY (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Mancini, Bastoni, Darmian; Barella, Fagioli, Cristante; El Shaarawy, Retegui, Chiesa. Coach: Spalletti.
