On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Guglielmo Marconithe Maritime Mutual Aid Society of Lerici is organizing an evening in honor of the great scientist – meeting on Thursday 4 July at 9pm on the terrace of the Erix sailing club – which will see the presentation of Silvano Benedetti’s book Guglielmo Marconi and the Italian Navy. After the introduction by Bernardo Ratti, president of the Marittima, the author, former director of the Naval Technical Museum of La Spezia (which since 2017 has had a room entirely dedicated to Marconi), will converse with Roberto Besana.

“La Marittima wanted to remember the figure of Guglielmo Marconi also because his discoveries were very important for the safety of navigation and Benedetti, in his book, explains it well – the words of Bernardo Ratti -. Among other things, 2024 marks 90 years of the so-called blind navigation: on 30 July 1934, in fact, in the bay of Sestri Levante, on board the Elettra, Marconi demonstrated how microwaves could be used to obtain a radiotelegraphy system useful for boats in conditions of poor visibility. Thursday’s initiative takes place in collaboration with the Erix sailing club, always available.”

Thursday’s initiative is among those organized for the 172nd anniversary of the foundation of the Lericina Maritime Society. It is followed by the award to Giovanni Soldini, the event with the master shipwright Ivo Ghiggini, the initiatives on the Transatlantic Rex and the commander Francesco Tarabotto, the Dialect Project with the Lericina schools, the sailors’ ex votos, the meeting on Ligurian cuisine and mortar pesto in Castelnuovo Magra, the memory of the clandestine scouts of the San Giorgio Group. “Others will be organized during the year, not without difficulty but always of a good level”, underlines Ratti.
