In the 2022-2023 campaign, the production of Pecorino Romano Dop stood at 366,000 quintals, an increase of 12.4% compared to the previous one, and the average annual value of sales was 13.48 euros per kilo, an increase of over 16% compared to 2022. This is what emerged today from the meeting of the members of the Consortium for the protection of Pecorino Romano, held in Donigala Fenughedu, in the facilities of the horticultural company Ros’e Mari. On this occasion, the 2023 budget was approved.

An element, that of price, which has brought great benefit to the entire supply chain. Pecorino Romano Dop is produced in a healthy way, which in Sardinia pushes the agri-food sector with around 500 million in annual production turnover and which remains a fundamental point of reference in the sheep’s cheese sector in the other two production areas, Lazio and the province of Grosseto.

Present at the meeting were the regional councilor for Agriculture Gianfranco Satta, Professor Giuseppe Pulina, professor of the University of Sassari, and Chiara Volpato of Nomisma, with a focus on the technical characteristics of the product and on the evolution of the markets and the new trends of consumption.

“We have achieved extraordinary results thanks to the commitment of all the members who work every day to grow the product, improve it and make it attractive on ever-changing markets,” said the president of the Protection Consortium, Gianni Maoddi. “Pecorino Romano is a unique, exclusive, strongly characterized cheese which over time has managed to guarantee rigorous respect for tradition and at the same time great attention to innovation, to provide consumers with a genuine product capable of satisfying expectations and tastes all over the world. We are investing heavily in international projects and everywhere we find an incredible response to our Pecorino Romano, increasingly appreciated as a cheese to be consumed pure as well as a fundamental ingredient of Italian recipes. The numbers we are currently recording, after the peaks reached during 2023, mark a result of great stability, fundamental for development on the markets because it provides the real value of the product. By maintaining these conditions, we can also hope for the future.”

Pecorino Romano has confirmed its strong propensity for export also during the 2022-23 season, with 70% of production destined for international markets. In particular, 40% of the exported product arrives in the United States market, solidly in command. 18% goes to the European Union market, 3% to Canada, 2% to Japan and the remaining 7% is distributed among the various non-European foreign markets.

The process of modifying the production specifications is still underway, both in the production and commercial parts. The goal is to make the specifications, or rather the set of rules that each producer must strictly adhere to in order to use the Pecorino Romano Dop branding, increasingly in step with the times. The surveillance activity and numerous initiatives will be substantial throughout 2023. anti italian soundingto protect the DOP and guarantee the consumer at the time of purchase and consumption.

An essential value for the Consortium is that of sustainability, in respect and for the protection of the environment. Unique in the sheep sector, the Consortium for the protection of Pecorino Romano participated in the Life Magis project, to evaluate and communicate the environmental footprint of Pecorino Romano Dop. “The issue of sustainability is particularly close to our hearts and has now become significant in all initiatives for the development of geographical indications. For this reason”, underlined the director of the Consortium, Riccardo Pastore, “the Consortium’s commitment in this direction is total and constant, with initiatives and projects that have respect for the environment as an essential prerequisite”.

Fifteen million euros have been invested by the Consortium in the last eight years in promotional projects all over the world: from Chizu in Japan to Pekorase in Germany, from Pr on Top in the USA to Task Eu in Switzerland and the United Kingdom, up to the last two, Empir Eu again in Germany and Kyoi again in Japan.

“The projects we have financed all over the world,” highlighted the president of the Consortium for the protection, Gianni Maoddi, “have had an important return, making the product and the sector grow. This would not have been possible without the effort made by the members who, since 2022, have paid a higher contribution for the branding rights and have therefore made it possible to finance the projects. I want to thank them, because their support has been absolutely fundamental.”

All projects include public relations activities, press events, website updates, social media activities, press advertising, production of information materials, participation in the most important trade fairs, seminars and workshops, promotion weeks, activities with chefs and cooking schools, food and wine information sessions in specialized channels.

In 2023 the Consortium participated in the most important sector fairs, from Cibus in Parma to Foodex in Tokyo, from Tutto Food in Milan to Winter and Summer Fancy Food in Las Vegas and New York up to Anuga in Cologne and Igheo in Basel. “The future for Pecorino Romano is full of opportunities and opportunities”, concluded Maoddi, “the Consortium will be able to seize them to grow the product and the sector to the benefit of the entire supply chain”.
