Even at the end of June the presence of toxic algae persists in Molfetta – MolfettaLive.it

The presence of toxic algae in the waters of Molfetta continues: even in the second part of the current month, in fact, ostreopsis ovata was detected by the ARPA workers in charge of monitoring.

As already happened in the first two weeks of June, even in the following weeks the presence is considered “scarce” but ascertained and calculated as a density of 600 cells for each liter.
The sample examined was taken on June 18th, in the Prima Cala area.

What emerges is that the data is increasing: at the beginning of the month the density of ostropsis ovata was “in the water column: 100 cells/liter”: the high temperatures certainly caused the worsening.
Another consideration to make is that in 2024 the toxic algae proliferated early, already in June, compared to previous years when it was necessary to arrive at the end of July for the first data to ascertain its presence, with a peak in mid-August.
Another consideration concerns the situation in Molfetta, which is nevertheless among the best on the coast: in nearby Bisceglie, for example, the red flag has appeared because the density of toxic algae has been classified as very abundant in light of the data “in the water column: 111339 cells/litre”. Same situation in Bari: toxic algae was found in the capital “in the water column: 230936 cells/litre”.

The next data, the third of the 2024 monitoring, will arrive by July 15th.
