Fiumicino, a conference on the cruise port at QCTerme

Fiumicino, 28 June 2024 – The conference, organised by the Timone committee, took place at the QC Terme resort. on the cruise port of Fiumicino: the work, included in the Jubilee Decree (read here) continues to animate the local political debate (and not only), with the controversies that touch especially the environmental issue. The port also came under the scrutiny of the Ministry of Culture last February, highlighting the critical issues and requesting further supplementary documentation (read here). However, the conference attempted to clarify several crucial pointsalso attended by the mayor of Fiumicino Mario Baccini and the CEO of Waterfront Galliano Di Marco, as well as the president of the Timone committee Giampaolo Nardozi.

In particular, the CEO of Waterfront went into more detail, also through the use of slides. According to these documents, the project would include approximately 1200 berths, a public park of 150 thousand square metres, a public square, sports, recreational and catering facilities, a local shipyard and nautical industry and also the recovery of the Old Lighthouse and the outriggers.

The project also involves the construction of a Circular Building overlooking the sea and a hotel. Di Marco and the others present, including Baccini, then underlined how the construction of the port would also have a significant impact on jobs in Fiumicino.

In short, the project is ambitious, but the actual implementation times and the further assessments that all the institutions involved will make, including Mibact, remain to be clarified.

Baccini: “The tourist port is a work of good”

I believe this is a strategic work, a marvel of port architecture at an international level.. Each passenger who arrives will make a contribution to the Municipality for the investment in works aimed at environmental protection, there will be the possibility of making the agricultural sector work and allowing those citizens of Fiumicino who are currently outside it to enter the world. AND’ a beautiful operation that we are confident in carrying forward” said the mayor of Fiumicino Mario Baccini, during his speech.

The Mayor then focused on the environmental issue: “I want to give a message to the whole city: this is a work of good, not evil. It is fueled by the strength of conviction, the culture of beauty. All this related activity will be able to give life to a new economy that Fiumicino currently does not know. We are ready to support this initiative and have also taken note of the reasons for the ‘no’, recording those in good faith. So much so that the cruise ship won’t turn on its engines when you’re in port, but it will be turned off and will be connected to an electrical cabin. It was a prescription from the Municipality of Fiumicino, because we don’t want the ship to remain with its engines running polluting unnecessarily.”

“We are strongly convinced in supporting this project: we support the reasons of a city that does not give up. We do not want to remain indifferent to investors who want to invest in our territory” concluded Baccini.
