Borgo Trento Hospital. Births resume under the 33rd…

And Monday 1st Julythe delivery rooms of theBorgo Trento Women’s and Children’s Hospital they will start attending again births of pregnant women even before the 33rd week of gestation. The decision, taken by the hospital medical management, comes after a period of close surveillance and following regional authorization, confirming the presence of the necessary safety conditions for the births of premature or seriously premature babies requiring Neonatal intensive care (NIC).

The temporary suspension of births under the 33rd week had been ordered on Last May 4thin response to an anomalous finding by Microbiology regarding the presence of Citrobacter koseri in the NICU. Colonization involved three newborns, none of whom developed the infection. These newborns were discharged and followed up over time, resulting in good health. During the closure period, in addition to the ordinary control measures, extraordinary measures were implemented such as increasing the frequency of swabs for newborns, carried out every 24 hours instead of every 72 hours.

The professor. Massimo Franchi, director of the Mother and Child Department, underlined the adoption of all the necessary measures to guarantee safety: “All measures have been adopted to avoid a risk situation, therefore we can revoke the prudential measure of closing births for pregnant women below the 33rd week. As a clinical doctor I say that all the steps have been taken, just as all the monitoring actions continue, including the environmental tests which have never identified the germ.”

By implementing rigorous safety protocols and continuous monitoring, the hospital is now able to ensure a safe environment for premature births, thus offering adequate and timely care to newborns and their families.
