Benevento: the Calandra educational center has been purchased. The joint press conference of the Province of Benevento – University of Sannio for the purchase of the real estate complex in Via Calandra n. 4, called “Polo Didattico Calandra”, was held in the Council Chamber of the Rocca dei Rettori, the contract for which had been signed a few minutes earlier in front of Notary Ambrogio Romano.

The following people spoke at the press conference: for UniSannio: the Rector Gerardo Canfora, the General Director Gianluca Basile, the professor delegated to Construction Giuseppe Maddaloni, the manager Simona Fontana; for the Province: the President Nino Lombardi, the Vice President Alfonso Ciervo, the Director of the Administrative Sector and of the Pnrr Nicola Boccalone, the Director of the Heritage and School Building Sector Salvatore Minicozzi.

The sale of the complex is part of an institutional collaboration between the Province and the University of Sannio which, as underlined by both the Rector Canfora and the President Lombardi, certainly does not end with today’s notarial deed, but will continue in order to realize other initiatives and other common objectives.

In fact, pursuing the same interest of the Province and the University in implementing and improving the logistical infrastructures serving teaching and research, the two Institutions will continue to work, as they have been doing for some time (see the University’s Civil Engineering Laboratory in Piazza Risorgimento), to make buildings available to their respective student audiences for Classrooms and Laboratories and make them attractive, efficient and comfortable. The University is also aiming to create a new Campus for students and the Province itself is looking for solutions in the area to meet the needs of Higher Institutes.

In particular, the University will offer the Province know-how and collaboration to intercept national and European funding sources for logistics which can be finalized to the needs of the University itself, taking into account that, underlined the Rector, it is easier at this time intercept financial resources for high schools and universities.

In this operational and programmatic context, the purchase of the real estate complex in Via Calandra n. 4, called “Polo Didattico Calandra”, is part of the program of reconstruction, renovation, improvement and energy efficiency of the 52 school buildings owned by the Province of Benevento which, at present, mobilizes a total of financial resources for approximately 60 million Euros. Polo Calandra returns a large area of Benevento to a single owner, allowing immediate implementation of important building interventions already approved, financed and contracted for 3 Upper Secondary Schools.

Since in the capital city, in whose territory there are 20 school buildings owned by the Province, the demolition and reconstruction of the “Alberti” and “Galilei” institutes is also planned, as well as the energy efficiency of the “Giannone” high school, all in the square Risorgimento, the Province signed a collaboration agreement with the University of Sannio to find suitable structures to include in the school offering in order to guarantee the regular continuity of teaching activities, while extraordinary interventions were implemented.

As part of this institutional synergy, a lease agreement was signed in February 2023 for the real estate complex called “Polo didattico Calandra” located in the street of the same name at number 4, on which, in another wing of the same complex, also the “Guacci” high school is located, to house at least some of the classes of the institutes to be demolished and rebuilt.
The complex consists of the buildings called bodies A and B – Classrooms/multi-storey, the Great Hall, Body C – Auditorium and Body D – Canteen and Offices, the external areas, with equipped greenery facing via Nicola Sala: subsequently, the University expressed its desire to sell the real estate complex and started a public tender procedure to identify a party interested in purchasing it.

The Province deemed it appropriate to express its interest by responding positively to the invitation to acquire the aforementioned assets to be added to the other wing, namely the “Guacci” High School. The procedure was therefore initiated to identify the sources of financing for the operation (a loan from the Cassa Depositi e Prestiti) and to bring it to the approval of the Provincial Council, competent in matters of patrimonial assets, which granted it last April.

This morning, before the Notary, the Deed of Sale was signed.

The operation is motivated by these main arguments:

-the identification of suitable real estate structures for the school offering concerned exclusively public bodies;

-the financial investment will be reinvested by the University of Sannio in the local area by further implementing the University’s logistical and infrastructural equipment;

– the satisfaction, in a medium-long term planning, of the logistical needs of the secondary schools (which will not end with the reconstruction of the “Alberti” and the “Galilei”), as part of the safety program , modernization and development of school building assets;

-the response to the growth of the school population in the capital;

– the provision of the City, thanks also to the cooperation of the Municipality of Benevento, of additional structures, services and spaces for the community: the Auditorium or Congress Center for hundreds of seats for musical and theatrical performances, Conferences-Debates; a new, large square; the possibility of creating additional spaces in the two-story building already used as a canteen; ultimately the possibility of creating a real Campus.
