the taxiway built in the northern area was inaugurated

The president of SACBO, Giovanni Sanga, cut the ribbon on the new taxiway B, the taxiway built in the northern area of the Bergamo airport grounds with an investment of approximately 35 million euros. He also understood the important ancillary works which overall contribute to determining conditions of greater efficiency and operational flexibility, reduction of aircraft waiting times and significant reduction of CO2 emissions on the ground.

Bergamo Airport: new way to pollute less

The new taxiway consists of the extension of the pre-existing one in the northern area of the airport grounds, parallel to the runway, for an additional length of approximately 1,600 metres. It allows aircraft parked in the north apron to reach the take-off point on heading 28 (east) thanks to two new connections. This procedure guarantees, on an annual basis, the saving of 270 hours of taxiing time and the reduction of a thousand tons of CO2, and has a positive impact on the punctuality of flights, both departing and arriving.

The construction works of the new taxiway B, carried out by a Temporary Association of Companies led by Artifoni, associated with the adaptation and arrangement of the northern aircraft apron and the creation of a stand dedicated to engine testing for aircraft up to class E (widebody) equipped with a flow barrier, it also involved a series of innovative and improved interventions on ground operations assistance systems and networks, all equipped with LED technology lighting systems. A low voltage electrical distribution system has been created on the taxiway, the first example ever in Italian airports, which allows for energy savings of over 80% compared to a standard system in terms of consumption and also offers greater safety of operations maintenance given the very low voltages in the field.

All interventions were carried out in collaboration with ENAV, the National Flight Assistance Agency, in order to optimize the operational management of the airport. In this regard, it should not be forgotten that since 2020 Milan Bergamo Airport has adopted Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM), an operational procedure aimed at improving air traffic management by streamlining traffic flow and airport capacity management, reducing delays, improving the predictability of events and optimizing the use of resources.

Sanga: “We work with a view to sustainability”

This new intervention, improving from an infrastructural and operational point of view, demonstrates how the development of the airport constantly pursues the objective of sustainability, to be achieved through innovative tools and solutions such as to create conditions of greater efficiency for the benefit of the environment and the context territorial – underlined Giovanni Sanga, president of SACBO –.”

“The criteria adopted in the design and construction of the new taxiway in the northern area of the airport respond to the most advanced technical standards to generate others with greater qualitative impact from a management point of view. This is the philosophy that accompanies SACBO – concluded Sanga – and is reflected in the short, medium and long-term vision which assigns to the airport the fulcrum function of mobility to and from other countries, of multimodality with regards to the network of local, inter-provincial and inter-regional connections, and a push factor for internationalization and to increasingly solid economic, professional and cultural exchanges”.
