‘Ndrangheta, the maxi trial begins in Calabria: 126 defendants

Hundred people postponed to judgment before the Court of Croton where the process will begin next October 9th; other 25, instead, they will be judge with the abbreviated procedure starting from early September. This is what the district judge of the preliminary hearing of Catanzaro Sara Merlini decided against the large group of defendants involved in the investigation called Glicine Acheronte which began in June last year at the conclusion of an investigation by the DDA which allegedly brought to light a political committee business, linked in some cases to the ‘Ndrangheta gangs, capable of influencing local and regional public administrations, directing the vote, deciding on appointments and contracts.

In the dock – as reported by AGI – there are all of them 126 defendants accused, for various reasons, of mafia association and criminal association aimed at committing crimes against the public administration. Excellent names from Calabrian politics such as the former president of the regional council would have been part of the hypothetical business committee as promoters and participants. Mario Oliverio and the former vice president Nicholas Adam, sent to trial; the former regional councilor Vincenzo Sculco (subject to house arrest since last June) whose position has been removed for health reasons and will be examined on 27 June by the preliminary hearing judge Merlini.

Among the defendants sent to trial again include the former municipal councilor of Crotone Giancarlo Devonaentrepreneurs John Mazzei, Raffaele Vrenna and his brother Gianni, respectively former president and current president of FC Crotone. And also managers of the Calabria Region and the Crotone Provincial Health Authority. So the boss of the gang of the same name Papanice Mico Megna and a large group of affiliates involved in a parallel line of investigation, considering that the papaniciari’s ‘ndrangheta club would have had systematic relations with the public administration. Megna he was sent to trial before the Catanzaro assize court for the murder of Salvatore Sarcone, murdered in September 2014 in Crotone.
