Miriam Janale, the 23-year-old young woman driving the Fiat Punto which crashed into the guardrails on the Palermo-Sciacca road at Giacalone at dawn on Sunday, is under investigation while at liberty for vehicular homicide and personal injury. The 16-month-old son Abd Rahim Gharsallah and 20-year-old Selma El Mouakit, the child’s aunt, lost their lives in the accident. The young woman who arrived in the emergency room under code red was discharged from the intensive care unit and returned to San Giuseppe Jato. After learning of the death of her son, the mother is assisted by a team of psychologists. The investigations are conducted by the carabinieri of the Monreale company.

Based on the tests, she was accused of being unskilled for driving with a blood alcohol level of 1.35 micrograms per liter in her blood. Almost three times the limit set by law which is 0.50. In the meantime, a procession of torches and white balloons greeted the bodies of Abd Rahim Gharsallah and Selma El Mouakit, the 16-month-old baby and the twenty-year-old who died in the accident. The local community has rallied around the Maghrebi family who arrived in the village a few decades ago. The bodies were cleansed and bandaged. As is the Islamic funeral rite, which begins with the washing entrusted to the oldest woman of the community, in the presence of the imam. The bodies, covered in white bandages, were placed in two coffins, one white and one brown, with a copy of the Koran on top. The mayor of San Cipirello Vito Cannella and the mayor of San Giuseppe Jato Giuseppe Siviglia were present at the procession.
