Operation Chinese Shuttle in Detail
Under the direction therefore of the Prosecutor’s Office and the Anti-Mafia Directorate of Trieste, it was the Border Police of Trieste to vanquish a Chinese criminal syndicate dedicated to aiding and abetting illegal immigration via the so-called Balkan route
Counterfeit passports and identity cards seized
During the activity, a large sum of cash (around 10 thousand euros) and 22 credit cards for payment in international circuits and Chinese credit institutions were seized, as well as 86 documents, of which 54 were altered and counterfeit ( passports and identity cards).
All the documents were registered to Chinese people, who were then used to safely transfer people to the Italian cities of destination (Venice, Milan and Prato mostly) or to foreign countries such as France and Spain.
Sorting point in the province of Venice
According to investigators, once in Italy the Chinese were transported by car to a central sorting point: a real “safe house” located in Cazzago di Pianiga (Venice) with around thirty beds available, where they stayed for a couple of days before being picked up to be taken to their final destinations without passports because they were requisitioned.
Documents stolen to become temporary slaves in workshops or tailors
A sort of temporary slavery – according to the investigators – accepted voluntarily, becoming “ghosts” destined for severe exploitation until the debt contracted to reach Italy is repaid.
Deprived of identity until the debt incurred for the trip is repaid
The investigations revealed the existence of a single top organisation, which planned a continuous and invisible flow of entries, hidden under the cover of unsuspecting Asian citizens, well dressed, with limited luggage, who traveled in powerful and expensive cars driven by citizens Chinese people who have lived in Italy for years and who express themselves in perfect Italian.
The details of the operation were presented on Wednesday 26 June during a meeting at the Prosecutor’s Office in Trieste. The investigations were directed by the prosecutor Federico Frezza.
