VARESE – Bruce Beutler, Nobel prize for Physiology and Medicine in 2011, will be in Varese on June 28th for a lectio magistralis. In those days four winners of the prestigious prize will be in Milan for the 48th congress of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies, which reflects on the role of biochemistry in human health and well-being (including Robert Huber, Venki Ramakrishnan and John Walker). Beutler guest in Varese

In Varese Beutler is the guest of honor of the conference «Immunology and innovative therapies: from tumors to infections»to be held at the Estense Hall with free entry, organized by the University of Insubria and in particular by the Department of Biotechnology and Life Science and the Department of Excellence in Economics. With the support of the Municipality and the Professor Loredano Pollegioni, professor of Biochemistry from Insubria, head of The Protein factory laboratory and member of the organizing committee of the important Febs congress in Milan. Beutler, American immunologist, professor and director of the genetics center of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas will speak with a keynote address entitled «Discovering mutations that cause cancer resistance»: it will be in English but simultaneous translation with earphones will be provided. The topic covered is the same as the Febs congress, but with a more informative approach and also suitable for a non-expert audience.

The conference

The Varese conference will open at 9.30 with institutional greetings from the rector of Insubria Angelo Tagliabueof the mayor of Varese Davide Galimbertiof the director of the Department of Economics Maria Pierro and the project manager Department of Excellence Raphael Seri. After Beutler’s lectio, until 12.15 pm a series of speeches by professors from Insubria moderated by the president of the School of Medicine Alberto Passi and from Loredano PollegioniThese are interventions that mix medicine and economics and explain its implications, allowing a transversal point of view at the Varese conference: «The link between science and economics is based on evaluation of what could be the social impacts of the most advanced scientific research on human health”, explains Loredano Pollegioni. The topics addressed are New anti-tumor vaccination strategies with Greta Forlani, A vaccine for tuberculosis: the ImmunoHub project with Loredano Pollegioni, Antimicrobial resistance in Europe: epidemiology and strategies to prevent its spread and to treat multi-resistant pathogens with Paolo Grossi, Immunology and patents in technology markets with Andrea Vezzulli, European incentives to support research and development of new therapies with Vincenzo Salvatore.
