In Civitavecchia, rail connections to the port are being strengthened

The final event of the project “Fast Track to the Sea, Implementing the upgrade of the last mile rail connections of the port of Civitavecchia”. The project involves the rearrangement of the tracks inside the port and the construction of a new railway line for the arrival and departure of trains, equipped with 7 tracks with a maximum length of 615 meters and which in the future could be extended up to 750 metres, in line with the most modern European standards for rail freight transport. Furthermore, a new connection will be activated with the container terminal and the areas adjacent to quay 25, and the connection with quays 23 and 24 will be improved, eliminating existing interference with the road system within the port.

The works, currently at an advanced stage, will be completed after the summer. The construction of the new infrastructure will allow the development of rail traffic to and from the port and the transfer of goods from road to rail, decongesting the local context from road flows of heavy vehicles.

The project was awarded a contribution of 3.8 million euros from the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility investment program, which represents the main instrument for financing transport infrastructures managed directly by the offices of the European Commission, through its Executive Agency CINEA – Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency. This financing is fully part of the activities that the Port System Authority is carrying out at community level and which have allowed its recent inclusion in the list of core ports of the TEN-T network.
