Half a Century of Research and Passion with CIRS Ragusa

Man and Karst 2024: A Bridge between Science and Nature

Ragusa Ibla, a baroque jewel of the Mediterranean and a UNESCO world heritage site, hosts the third edition of “Man and Karst 2024” from 24 to 26 June, an event that marks the fiftieth anniversary of the CIRS – Ibleo Center for Speleo-Hydrogeological Research .

This biennial conference, which in the past has brought together university professors, researchers, speleologists, hikers and nature lovers, is confirmed as an unmissable event for those fascinated by the underground world and its scientific and cultural implications.

The event takes place in a fascinating historical-geographical context: Ragusa, the capital of the southernmost province of Italy, stands as a bridge between millenary history and the contemporary challenges of speleological research.

The city, nestled between two river karst valleys, represents an ideal meeting point to discuss the relationship between man and karst, share research experiences and strengthen ties between old and new friends in the sector.

The 2024 edition of “Man and Karst” is not limited to theoretical discussion alone; in fact, taking advantage of the central position of Ragusa in the Mediterranean, the organizers have planned excursions to the most interesting karst contexts of south-eastern Sicily.

From 24 to 29 June, participants have the opportunity to explore the Iblean fluviokarst canyons, the scenic chalk caves of the evaporite basin of central-southern Sicily and the lava tubes on the slopes of Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe.

“Man and Karst 2024” aims to contribute to the knowledge, valorization and protection of the karst landscape and its caves, with the related ecosystems and historical-anthropological resources.

The event aims to be an optimal scientific research tool, not an end in itself or for a few users, but at the service and benefit of the entire community.
