The chronic backwardness of a region: an obstacle to national progress

Training courses, certification of skills, cleaning of territories and safety measures: opportunities lost through whose fault?

We live in an era where technological and social progress is advancing by leaps and bounds, yet our region seems to be stuck in a distant past, unable to seize the opportunities made available by the government. It is a profound indignation that I feel in seeing the chronic backwardness of a region that does not take advantage of the resources offered to improve the quality of life of its citizens.

Let’s take for example the courses of the GOL program (Workers’ Employability Guarantee). This government initiative, designed to reduce unemployment and improve the skills of the workforce, is slow to deliver in a region that seems to be deliberately ignoring the potential of such a tool. Training courses are essential to creating a competitive labor market and to giving young people and the unemployed a real chance to build a solid future. Yet these courses are being neglected, leaving thousands without opportunities for professional growth.

It is not only a question of employment, but also of security and well-being of the territory. The failure to implement the certification of skills creates a professionalism void which is reflected in the quality of the services offered. In a world where the certification of skills is a passport to efficiency and reliability, this region prefers to remain in improvisation, condemning its citizens to lower standards of living.

But the picture is even more bleak if we consider the inertia in the operations of cleaning up the territories and in securing the areas affected by the hydrogeological instability. The government allocates funds and resources to deal with these emergencies, but the region in question seems to live in an eternal bureaucratic paralysis. Every year we witness avoidable disasters, with lives lost and assets destroyed, all because those in charge are unable or unwilling to act.

What makes the situation even more frustrating is the attitude of those at the top. Despite numerous requests for meetings to highlight these major issues, regional leaders continue to ignore citizens’ voices. The priorities seem to be elsewhere, perhaps in less urgent projects, leaving the real emergencies to fester in indifference. They give no chance to be heard, completely ignoring the cry for help from a community that deserves so much more.

It is a national shame that in a country so rich in history and resources, there are still regions unable to keep up with the rest of the nation. The opportunities are there, the resources are available, yet mental and organizational backwardness continues to prevail. This negligent attitude is not only a brake on regional development, but an obstacle to the progress of the entire nation.

Change is possible, but a strong and determined political will is needed. Citizens need to raise their voices and hold their administrators to account. We can no longer accept that our region remains behind while the rest of the world advances. It is time to act, to demand that the resources made available by the government are used efficiently and promptly. It’s time to say enough to backwardness and work for a better future for everyone.
