The demand for work is growing but not hiring

Wednesday 26 June 2024 – 08:15

11 thousand workers were requested in June this year by companies in the provinces of Lucca, Massa-Carrara and Pisa. The value is substantially the same as that of 12 months ago, with the difference that, although there are positive signals from the data coming from Lucca and Massa-Carrara, Pisa, with the crisis in the fashion sector, it drags the average of the data for the three areas downwards. At the provincial level, good results were achieved in the industrial and construction sectors; less dynamic was the demand for personnel in the services sector due to the slowdown in tourism.

The data appears to be worrying as early as 2023 since the three provinces in question are experiencing a critical moment regarding the unmet request for personnel, as demonstrated by the data published by the information system Excelsiorsurvey carried out by Unioncamere in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies.

“The data we present today – stated the president of the Chamber of Commerce of North West Tuscany, Valter Tamburini – highlight a varied situation that reflects the different trends of the sectors. One crucial element, however, clearly emerges: the growing difficulty in finding qualified personnel. Difficulties in meeting labor demand highlight the importance of targeted and timely interventions to facilitate the link between education and work. Faced with this challenge we will shortly launch a tender, on which we have allocated 100 thousand euroswhich will offer economic incentives for companies that participate in transversal skills and orientation courses“.

For the province of Lucca, the demand for workers in the month of June 2024 remains positive in relation to scheduled hirings which number 5,470 jobs filled, with a value increasing by 3% compared to the same period last year. Specifically, the sectors that benefit most from the jobs created and occupied are theindustry,
buildings and utilities with a +34% and that of trade with a +12%.

As regards the province of Massa-Carrara, the growth in job demand continues in June this year with a +4% compared to the same month last year, reaching 2,120 hirings.

Interesting is the comparison between the percentage of increase linked to the finding of professional profiles which marks a +47% and the counter-trend data which shows an increase in hiring with a +8% in the construction sector, a +30% in the of commerce and +4% of the service sector; the mismatch lies in the positive numbers of both the percentage of personnel requests and those linked to the actual procurement of the same.

A completely different story for the job demand of companies in the Pisa area which in the month of June recorded a -10%, reaching 3,450 hires.

Considering the sectors, June presents a significant decrease in industry, in particular in the manufacturing and public utilities sector with -43%, tourism drops to -4% and business services reach -14%; all this is reflected in a clear decrease in job applications.

Most of the hiring at this time of year is in the restaurant industry with 26% of the total job hiring in the province of Pisa.
