Health / Acireale, CSVE prostate cancer prevention campaign

It took place at the CSVE (Etna voluntary service centre) of Acireale, the presentation of the prostate cancer prevention campaign. The tumor is the second most widespread neoplasm in Italy, second only to lung cancer, with fifteen thousand new cases a year.

Salvo Raffa, president of the CSVE, declared: “Prevention, as doctors always repeat, is the best weapon we have in the fight against cancer. Prevention means cure. Florence Nightingalethe first nurse in the modern meaning of the term, claimed, after returning from the war in the Crimea where she had served as a volunteer, that a healthy diet “accelerated” recovery times.
Florence Nightingale was the first in the medical field to use statistics and infographics to treat her patients.”

The elderly are increasingly left alone. It was born on the basis of art. 41 of the third sector code “Anzitaria”, an association network that takes care of people who have entered old age, both from a social and health point of view. Given that, often, clubs for the elderly are unable to open in the area. On my initiative, the campaign “Cancer doesn’t look at anyone in the face” was born to raise public awareness of how cancer can often appear in the younger segment of the population.” – underlined the president of AIRA (Association of elderly people) Maria Brunella Stancato.

The importance of prostate cancer prevention

“Prostate cancer – illustrated the urologist specialist Riccardo Castro – It is the second most common cancer in Italy after lung cancer. In this regard, for years now, “Movember” has been taking place, an event that aims to raise awareness of prostate cancer. Prevention also means respect for those around us. There is a great deal of misinformation about the symptoms of prostate cancer. On the other hand, this type of tumor is asymptomatic. Prostate cancer is prevented by taking vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E; it is necessary to take lycopene, zinc, managanese, selenium; enzymes found in vegetables and grains. Drinks such as beer, coffee and foods such as spices and fatty cheeses should be avoided. A sedentary lifestyle and genetics, therefore family history, also contribute to the onset of prostate cancer.”

“Our prevention campaign -continues the doctor – it is based on the compilation of forms, on which each interested party must write their own clinical history. In doing so, the urology department of the S.Venera and S.Marta hospital in Acireale will take care to contact them for control operations and any diagnosis. The prevention campaign is still in progress, but we plan to implement our network as soon as possible.”

Participating in the presentation were: Salvo Raffa, president of CSV Etna, Maria Brunella Stancato, president of AIRA, Fabio Ferlito, pharmaceutical company manager, Maria Letizia Altavilla.
