Rho (Milan) – All in line, behind the orange construction site fence, like pupils on a school trip. In silence listening to the archaeologists’ story and admiring the ancient Roman road and the other archaeological finds found during the excavations in Piazza Visconti in Rho.

The visitors were also accompanied by the Councilor for Culture Valentina Giro and some young people who are undertaking civil service. “This area will go from being an expanse of asphalt to a green square, it is one of the projects financed with Pnrr funds. We knew that we could find something ancient and for this reason preliminary surveys and excavations had been carried out, but finds emerged that we did not expect to find”, explains the councilor. And so it was. And in the field, alongside the construction site workers , a team of six experts also came down.
“We have fact assistance during all excavations. To date we have managed to identify elements that reveal the history of this stretch of the city – says Stefano Cervo – we found two wells, remains of slaughtered and buried cattle, the remains of an ancient farmland with signs of ploughing, documenting the early medieval phases. Let’s stayor documenting a well, pillars and two phases of cobbled pavement which probably pertains to the ancient churchyard. The two roads identified are important because they are 8 to 10 meters wide, they are the main axes, cardo maximus and decumanus maximum”.
«We dig and the Municipality will carry out the regeneration project – replies Tommaso Quirino for the Superintendency -. Everything found will be documented, there will be a technical and photographic report. Together with the Municipality we want to enhance what is happening and there will be public meetings to tell everyone about it.”
