Sustainable Cities Challenge: Venice is among the finalists

Venice is among the 10 finalists of the Sustainable Cities Challenge. The lagoon city is applying thanks to the promotion of new sustainable mobility solutions for both water and land vehicles.

There Sustainable Cities Challenge is a global mobility competition that aims to prepare the cities of the future to support innovations capable of transforming the lives of millions of people. The initiative is promoted by the Toyota Mobility Foundation in collaboration with Challenge Works and the World Resources Institute and offers a final prize of 9 million euros.

There is also one of the ten cities candidate to win Venice.

Sustainable Cities Challenge: Venice aims to win

The candidacy of the Serenissima is focused on the promotion of new sustainable mobility solutions for both water and land vehicles. Should it win, the city team will work with local stakeholders to address various mobility issues and identify the best solutions.

«In recent years, under the leadership of the mayor Luigi Brugnarothe city of Venice has improved its infrastructure and sustainable mobility services. The objective is to increase the number of users who rely on sustainable means of transport, adopting innovative solutions” is the comment of the Mobility councilor, Renato Boraso. «We hope that the transition to more sustainable choices will lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, air and water pollution. Venice technicians will be invited to participate in an academy to develop and support the project’s potential, becoming part of a broader network of innovative teams.

The other finalist cities

More than 150 cities in 46 countries submitted their applications. The evaluations were based on the potential impact of the challenge, the reception of the approaches open innovation, the scope of the projects and the specific objective of the application. In the end, three finalist cities will be chosen to launch their own urban challenges and, in mid-2024, an invitation will be extended to global innovators to collaborate with the winning cities.
