PMA conference in Palermo

Over 15% is the official infertility rate in Italy. It is one of the lowest (1.3 children per woman) in Europe and the birth rate decline could soon lead to a crisis in the welfare system and an increasingly difficult generational change. And so current events lead us to once again turn the spotlight on Pma, medically assisted procreation. The appointment is in Palermo for “Processes and models in reproductive medicine”, an annual conference that will be held at the Best Western “Ai Cavalieri” hotel, from Thursday 27 June to Saturday 29.

MAP is a decidedly hot topic in the public debate, involving not only medical-scientific, but psychological, social, ethical, religious and legal aspects. During the three days in Palermo there will also be space to delve into many topics, from the influence of artificial intelligence to the quality of laboratories, from the importance of personalizing therapies and having a correct approach with infertile couples to the role of correct nutrition , the incidence of STDs, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, on the fertility of couples. The statistics speak clearly: in Italy, the infertility of one couple in five, therefore 20%, is caused by STDs.

“A very important chapter of gynecological pathology – underlines Professor Antonio Perino, Head of the Pma Intercompany Center with the collaboration of Ospedali Riuniti Villa Sofia-Cervello and Policlinico di Palermo, Asp Palermo – and of the relationship that these genital infections and STIs have with infertility. Asp 6 Palermo has just launched a diagnosis and treatment program for young people and in general for the population with infertility problems. It is a topic on which the attention of researchers is increasingly being focused, because they play an important role in the determinism of tubal sterility, but because we are understanding certain mechanisms that are at the basis of the failures of MAP in these subjects and cause certain losses early fetuses. We will talk about all this, also in light of the data from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità”.

“In continuity with last year – observes Dr. Giuseppe Valenti, scientific director of the Genesy Center of Palermo and of the sterility division of the CRPO of Livorno, president of the conference with professor Antonio Perino – our objective is to address young people doctors, whether they are gynecologists, or even biologists, midwives, psychologists, professionals in training. We will articulate the conference on various aspects, in addition to the purely scientific ones, also political, cultural and ethical ones, for example on Thursday afternoon also thanks to the participation of professionals, representatives of orders and the ministry”.

Thursday’s round table, the first important moment of the conference, will be concluded by the lectio magistralis of the lawyer Filomena Gallo, secretary of the “Luca Coscioni” Association for freedom of scientific research Aps
