In a region like Calabria, with an asphyxiated economy and an alarming unemployment rate (around 47%), a thousand workers at risk of dismissal represent a worrying cross-section. We are talking about the dispute which sadly sees theAbraham Customer Care, a company with offices in Catanzaro, Cosenza and Crotone, which has been in free fall for some time due to the crisis in the call center sector and the end of orders. The workers have been living on the edge of the precipice for years now and in recent days they are raising their voices in an attempt to draw the attention of national and local politicians to their case. Around 400 have demonstrated in recent days in Catanzaro, while 200 are in a permanent assembly in the hall of the Crotone municipal council.

The request is the convening of a crisis table at the Ministry of Business in view of the expiration of the Tim contract on June 30th and regarding the uncertainties regarding the sale of a business unit. The protester’s request is a call to arms from Calabrian politics, national and local, to take action to defend jobs. The position taken by the mayors of Catanzaro, Cosenza and Crotone goes in this sense, who in a joint note expressed “their concern and their closeness to the employees, ensuring full support for the action of the unions engaged in the field to claim the rights to preservation of jobs”.

The president of the Region, Roberto Occhiuto, also spoke on the matter. “I have almost daily conversations with Tim and government figures,” he said. I believe that there could be a short extension to avoid there being a solution to the relationship for these workers, but there is still work to be done to find a solution that structurally guarantees the workers to look to the future with greater serenity than they were able to do in the ‘last period”.

The skein is therefore difficult to untangle. The desperate workers who risk unemployment remain on the field, and do not give up an inch, in the face of a policy that must now show all the strength and sagacity necessary to save 1000 families from despair.
