Red weather alert today in Emilia Romagna due to river floods and strong thunderstorms: here’s where

Bologna, 25 June 2024 – Bad weather in Emilia Romagnait continues to rain in the region and the situation is increasingly critical. The alert today becomes red due to river floods, strong thunderstorms and possible landslides in part of the region from 12pm, it will be valid until midnight: rainfall may generate new rises in watercourses, already affected by the floods. The areas most affected by the rains will be those Piacenza-Parma, the Modena plain and the Reggio Emilia plain.

Alert orange, with therefore intense but less dangerous phenomena, on the central Emilian mountains and the central Emilian hills. Yellow alert in the rest of the region.

Red weather alert in Emilia Romagna for strong thunderstorms and possible landslides in the areas of the Piacenza-Parma, Modena and Reggio Emilia plains

“In the afternoon – we read in Civil Protection bulletin – favorable conditions are foreseen for the development of strong thunderstorms, with possible effects and associated damage, more likely on the central sector of the region, which has been waning since the evening. In the mountainous and hilly areas of the region, localized landslide phenomena are possible on slopes characterized by particularly fragile hydrogeological conditions, runoff on the slopes and rapid rises in hydrometric levels in smaller watercourses. Precipitation may generate new elevations in the waterways, already affected by the floods, which in the valley sections of the central-western sector will reach levels close to or higher than the banks or the historical maximums recorded”.

Orange alert again tomorrow 26 June

Bad weather without respite, the rains will continue tomorrow too but with less criticality. The Arpae issued an orange alert for the Piacenza-Parma, Modena and Reggio Emilia plains as well as for the mountain and hilly areas of central Emilia.

“In the afternoon – explains the bulletin – the possibility of scattered thunderstorms and short-lived, locally also of strong intensity, more likely along the Apennine belt, with possible associated effects and damage. I am possible increases also on the hydraulic lattice minor. The current floods are expected to spread in the valley sections of the rivers in the central-western sector, with possible occupation of the floodplain areas and involvement of the embankments”. Localized landslides are still possible in mountain and hilly areas.

On June 26th the orange alert remains in various areas of the region, from Parma to Reggio Emilia: the phenomena are expected both in the plains and in the hills and mountains

For each of the three scenarios there is a risk, from occasional to serious, for people’s safety. The alert orange predicts phenomena that are more intense than normal, dangerous for things and people. For example, flooding, landslides and flows are possible in critical geological contexts.
