VARESE – The financiers of the provincial command of Varese and the customs officers of the provincial directorate of the Customs and Monopolies Agency seized, at the Gaggiolo crossing, a Ferrari smuggled into EU territory.

The yellow flames, on duty on the border line to safeguard the economic and financial interests of the State and the European Union, were intrigued by a Volkswagen car with a United Kingdom license plate towing a trolley with a Ferrari Purosangue on board. This is a very recent model from the Maranello company, currently produced in very few examples. The presence of the luxury car with a Swiss license plate and the methods of transport convinced financiers and customs officers to carry out a more accurate check, including documentary ones.

After the inspection of the vehicles, aimed at excluding the presence of contraband goods or currency exceeding the threshold established by law, the operators asked the driver of the vehicle for the documentation accompanying the Ferrari, in particular the registration document and the declaration certifying the relevant customs status, immediately noting its absence. To better clarify the customs dynamics, the economic-financial police and officials of the Customs and Monopolies Agency requested, with the tools of international cooperation, useful information from the Swiss authorities, a move that proved decisive.

It was thus discovered that the luxury sports car had been purchased 1 day before transport at a Ferrari dealer in Switzerland. The future owner, before registration, had requested the racing car in Italy therefore, violating the regulations in force, a Swiss license plate was affixed to the Ferrari, with the intention of evading any controls which, following the international information exchange , was associated with another vehicle. Consequently, in the absence of registration, like any other goods, upon entry into Italy the importer would have had to present a specific customs declaration to quantify the border duties due, specific to the national and European budget.

The driver of the truck, who turned out to be an English employee of the buyer of the Ferrari, was then reported to the Prosecutor’s Office of the Court of Varese. He will now have to answer for aggravated smuggling with evasion of border duties amounting to 138,000 euros and ideological falsehood while the cars, including the Volkswagen instrumental in the commission of the crime, were seized and made available to the judicial authority which validated the documents drawn up. If the suspect is convicted, the seized items may be confiscated and acquired as state assets. In the same perspective, those responsible for the illicit importation will have to pay the customs duty and VAT quantified according to law to the treasury.
