Avellino, this is how Nargi won over Gengaro: the difference in the suburbs

Laura is there. She is Nargi the new mayor of Avellinothe first woman to ascend to the highest seat of City Palace. The final result assigns 12,501 votes to the new first citizen (51.84%) and 11,612 votes to her challenger, supported by the centre-left, Antonio Gengaro (48.16%).

Not a landslide victory – less than a thousand preferences difference – yet Nargi managed to come back after having had a disadvantage of around 1500 preferences over her opponent in the first round who had come close to 37%, while Nargi had obtained 32, 49%. L’turnout it stopped at 53.78%, a physiological drop – as often happens – compared to the first round which, also thanks to the driving force of the European elections – had reached almost 70% of voters.

Even before the official result, when there were still two thousand ballots to be scrutinized, carousels on scooters and festive cars immediately appeared in the city, making noise with horns, fireworks and smoke bombs, processions and chants from Via Matteotti to Piazza Libertà already in the early afternoon, close to the electoral committee of the winner. A cheering crowd which made it necessary to close Via Matteotti to traffic for about an hour with the traffic police cordoning off the road to close it to traffic. She, beaming, presented herself to her committee in a green suit like the colors of the city. Many wanted to participate in the victory, as the ex’s brother did Mayor FestaDanilo, who surrounded Laura in a big hug among the crowd.

The tension

A victory, that of Nargi, which arrives in a heated climate after a no-holds-barred electoral campaign. It couldn’t have been otherwise after the outgoing administration, the one led by Gianluca Festa and with Laura Nargi deputy, was forced to resign after the start of the “Dolce Vita” investigation regarding the tenders assigned by the Municipality and – this is the thesis of the Avellino prosecutors – the public competitions decided at the table. If the former tricolor band was the recipient of the precautionary measure of house arrest, the new mayor remains under investigation for criminal association. Themes concerning the investigation, which although they made the electoral campaign incandescent, in the end had no impact on Nargi’s victory.

The map

It is above all in the suburbs that Nargi has established herself: in Borgo Ferrovia the new mayor has outpaced her opponent, the situation is not dissimilar in San Tommaso where Nargi obtained around 400 preferences more than Gengaro, the performance in Rione Mazzini is also good and so too in the fiefdom of Contrada Bagnoli of the two former councilors (who will probably be reconfirmed in the new council) Marianna Mazza and Antonio Genovese. The centre-left, however, proved to be competitive in the centre, in what is now defined as the ZTL.

The delusion

Very different climate at Antonio Gengaro’s electoral committee. The former deputy mayor of Di Nunno to be able to win the contest for Palazzo di Città. And, with him, the center-left also believed in it and brought all the national big names from Rome to try to give a boost to the Democrat candidate. The national secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, set Piazzetta Biagio Agnes on fire last week and, similarly, the leader of the 5 Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte, did the same. Just i Five stars they were probably the sore point for the coalition which, in Avellino, unlike many other situations, managed to present itself as united, putting aside the skirmishes that occurred elsewhere. In the first round, if the PD had come close to 20%, the M5s instead just exceeded 5%. Nargi instead managed to widen the perimeter by receiving the support of the third civic front led by Rino Genovese, but above all a ras of preferences such as Livio Petitto. Balances that will probably also have to be found at the polls in the assignment of the future council.
