Fifteen years after the earthquake in Abruzzo, the exhibition on the reconstruction of L’Aquila in Brussels

The story of the reconstruction fifteen years after the earthquake. The traveling exhibition was inaugurated in Brussels, in the institutional headquarters of the Abruzzo Region “2009-2024: Fifteen years since the earthquake in Abruzzo”. Images and videos will also be exhibited in L’Aquila next September.

A traveling exhibition, photographs and videos, on state of reconstruction in the municipality of L’Aquila and in the municipalities of the seismic crater organized by Abruzzo Region, in collaboration with the Municipalities and Special Offices for Reconstruction, USRA and USRC.
The exhibition, entitled “2009-2024: Fifteen years since the earthquake in Abruzzo”, contains the exhibition of photographs of most representative buildings from a historical, artistic, architectural, cultural and engineering point of view, shown before and after repair or reconstruction interventions, to tell the meritorious activity of the Special Offices and Municipalities involved in the reconstruction.
“The exhibition highlights the work done in these 15 years – the engineer underlines to our microphones Raffaello Fico, owner of the Special Office for the reconstruction of the Crater – Having recounted the evolution of the reconstruction process in front of many institutional representatives testifies to the much work done and how much there is still to do. We are at 65% progress in private reconstruction, but not all municipalities are in the same conditions. There are, in fact, municipalities in the Upper Aterno Valley that are further behind than others; just as there are Municipalities over 70%. In short, the panorama is varied since the territory affected by the operations is particularly vast. We can say, however, that the results to date are satisfactory and we are finally well organized to complete the reconstruction.”

The engineer Salvatore Provenzano, owner of the Special Office for the Reconstruction of L’Aquila, added: Starting to talk about social reconstruction means that physical reconstruction is already well underway, beyond the critical issues and delays. In Brussels there was a lot of interest in the story of the work done: interventions that have seen and continue to see very important investments. In addition to the resources allocated to reconstruction, in fact, there are those of the PNC, the national plan complementary to the PNRR, which looks precisely at non-physical reconstruction: since after the buildings, we need to think about valorising them and making these places socially reborn. It is no coincidence that L’Aquila, a few months ago, won the title of Italian Capital of Culture for 2026“.

The exhibition was inaugurated in Brussels at the institutional headquarters of the Abruzzo Region, in the presence of the President of the regional council, Marco Marsilio, of the Director General, Antonio Sorgi, of institutional representatives of the EU, of Salvatore Provenzano owner of USRA and of Raffaello Fico owner of USRC, of the Ambassadors in Brussels, of the associations of Abruzzo people in Belgium and of the Delegation Italian at the Committee of the Regions. An initiative driven by the aim of sharing with the public the progress and resilience demonstrated by the region over the last fifteen years: a special occasion to commemorate, reflect and look to the future with hope. To open the exhibition, during the inaugural event, the performance of the actor from L’Aquila Marco Valeri, who recited a monologue on the L’Aquila earthquake. The exhibition will return to L’Aquila in September, where it will be presented with an institutional event.
