Sestito’s request: “A more responsible environmental policy”

“While we wait to know what will happen to the reclamation of the SIN area of Crotone, it is with growing concern that the citizens of Crotone are turning to local institutions, the Calabria Region, the Municipality of Crotone and the Province of Crotone, to ask for an account of the decisions taken regarding the authorization of new waste disposal facilities in the area. It is unthinkable to continue to poison and sell off the Crotone territory, already seriously compromised by decades of uncontrolled industrial activity. The health and well-being of citizens must take priority over any economic or political interest.”
This is what the president of Acri Aps Crotone, Filippo Sestito, writes in a note in which he adds: “We have already asked the following unanswered questions to the institutions months ago:
• Why was the green light given for the construction of a 25 tonnes per day gasification plant in Crotone to treat dangerous and non-hazardous organic waste and wash containers in such an environmentally sensitive area?
• Why was the green light given for the construction of a waste-to-energy plant for up to 65 thousand tons of industrial waste, including pharmaceuticals, in Crotone?
• Have the authorities realized the potential negative repercussions that these activities could have on the health of citizens and the local ecosystem?
It is essential that institutions reflect on the consequences of their decisions and answer these questions publicly. Citizens have the right to know why decisions continue to be made that jeopardize their health and future without any transparency or public accountability.
Request for a more responsible environmental policy: We believe that it is necessary to put an end to this continuous environmental aggression towards the Crotone territory. It is time to adopt a more responsible and sustainable environmental policy that protects people’s health and safeguards the natural heritage of our city. We citizens of Crotone can no longer bear to be victims of choices that jeopardize our health and our future.
We ask the competent authorities to operate with greater transparency and responsibility, making citizens accountable for their actions and finally placing public health at the center of their decisions.
