The mayor of Udine Alberto Felice De Toni, accompanied by the deputy mayor Alessandro Venanzi, by the Councilor for Local Police and Participatory Security Rosi Toffano, by the Councilor for Health and Social Equity Stefano Gasparin and by the commander of the Local Police Eros Del Longo, participated in this morning at the Provincial Committee for Order and Security convened by the Prefect Domenico Lyone.

During the meeting, the institutional and police representatives described the measures and numbers relating to the activity carried out so far, aimed at managing public order in the city. However, it was decided to make a further joint effort to reduce the opportunities for risk and danger, particularly during weekends.

On the part of the Prefecture it was decided to place an army patrol in the historic center in addition to the increase in the so-called joint foot patrols, already present in the city during the week and on weekends, which will take care of a punctual patrol of the city streets. The municipality for its part will issue an ordinance that limits the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the city with particular attention to the area surrounding the station.

In particular, the ordinance, which will be registered tomorrow and signed by the mayor Alberto Felice De Toni, will have a duration of 30 days renewable for another 30 and provides for the ban on the sale of alcoholic and spirit drinks to take away in premises and commercial and artisan establishments from 9pm at 6am the next day.

The ban will be brought forward to 6pm in the streets belonging to the so-called Magnolie District.

Furthermore, it was decided to ban the serving of alcoholic beverages starting from 1 am throughout the entire municipal area.

“A necessary tightening after the latest episodes of violence” stated Mayor Alberto Felice De Toni. “Our hope was that the increase in controls and supervision of the city implemented by the police, in synergy with what was done by the municipal administration – with the new neighborhood police, joint patrols, the presence of guards sworn on the territory and on the buses – were sufficient measures. Unfortunately we have seen that this is not enough. It is the will of the municipal administration to intervene firmly and continuously on the negative phenomena that can also arise from the abuse of alcoholic and spirit drinks, ensuring safety as well as civil and peaceful coexistence for the citizens of Udine. For this reason we have evaluated a crackdown on the sale and administration of alcohol, with particular attention to the Magnolie District. All this is part of a framework of collaboration and sharing with all law enforcement agencies and in particular with the Provincial Committee for Order and Security and goes in the direction of responding as effectively as possible to the needs of our citizens , who ask to be able to work, live and have fun in a safer city”.
