MOLFETTA – Salvatore (Sal) Scardigno, president of the Molfetta Federation of America, died at the age of 79 in Hoboken. Born in Molfetta in August 1944, Salvatore attended Italian schools up to the Nautical Technical Institute in Bari, before emigrating to the United States in November 1961 with his family. In Italy, Salvatore had organized socio-cultural activities, guiding the young people of the GIAC (Italian Youth of Catholic Action) and the POA (Pontifical Assistance Association) and actively participating in the activities of the CSI (Italian Sports Centre). In the United States, Scardigno attended Dickinson High School in Jersey City and the Newark College of Engineering (now the New Jersey Institute of Technology), graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1969. He practiced various roles in the field of mechanical-nuclear engineering at the nationally and internationally, working for the Foster Wheeler Corporation (Livingston, NJ), Ansaldo Componenti Nucleari in Genoa, Nucleare Italiana Reattori Avanzati and Ebasco Services Inc. of New York. For over 60 years he contributed to the foundation of numerous social, cultural and sporting organizations, including Molfetta Sportiva, the Molfetta Federation of America, the Puglia Federation of New Jersey, the Puglia Women’s Association of America and the Association Young Puglians of America. He was the author of many technical articles on nuclear mechanical engineering and numerous books on the city of Molfetta. Among other roles he was a consultant in the Puglia Regional Council under the administration of the president of the Puglia Region Salvatore Distaso and a member of the General Council of Pugliese in the World under the administrations of Raffaele Fitto, Nichi Vendola and Michele Emiliano. Currently, Salvatore was President of the Pugliesi Federation of New Jersey, President of the Molfetta Federation of America and elected Councilor of the General Council of Pugliesi nel Mondo for North America. The condolences of the director Felice de Sanctis and the editorial staff of “Fifteen” go to the family.
