Noale, Scorze, Spinea and Portogruaro (Venice) choose the mayor

Noale, Spinea, Portogruaro and Scorzè return to the polls to choose the mayor with a run-off vote. Polling stations open today (Sunday) from 7am to 11pm and tomorrow (Monday) from 7am to 3pm, the counting will take place immediately afterwards. The challenge for the candidates is to get the voters to return to the sections without the driving force of the European elections and to convince those who in the first round had chosen other aspirants for the office of mayor. With 9,123 voters out of 14,077 eligible voters, Noale had one of the highest turnout percentages, 64.8%. The match is almost a derby in Patrizia Andreotti’s council between the deputy mayor Alessandra Dini (civic: 26.7%) and the former budget councilor Stefano Sorino (Fdi, civic, Lega, Fi: 36.3%). Played from the first round with very harsh tones, the derby is also in Scorzè but in the centre-right, between the outgoing mayor Nais Marcon (civic and former Northern League member in disagreement with the party: 31.6%) and the former mayor Giovanni Battista Mestriner (Fdi, Lega, Fi, Ci and civica: 46.5%). Igino Michieletto, Pd, who was mayor of Scorzé until 1999, added more spice: «Due to my history and my political sensitivity, it is very difficult for me to put a sign where I find paired symbols of parties like FdI and Lega», he declared with a public post. Mestriner’s reaction was seraphic: “It’s okay for someone to fight for an inclusive society but it’s a bit funny to do so by voting for Gabriele Michieletto (Marcon supporter, ed.), someone who also despises Liberation Day.” Even in Spinea the centre-right had arrived divided in the first round and between the two litigants Franco Bevilacqua (Pd, centrists, civic) had taken the lead with 47%. The candidate of Fdi, Lega, Ci and civica Claudio Tessari had obtained 30%; although the 23% of Marti-na Vesnaver (former mayor, former League, supported by Forza Italia and civic groups) was considered interesting, there was no formal alliance due to previous disagreements. The turnout in the first round was 59.3%. The lowest among the four Municipalities voting was in Portogruaro (58.4%) where the classic challenge is played between the centre-right with Luigi Toffolo (Fdi, Lega, Fi and civice; 39.8%) and the centre-left with Antonio Bertoncello (Pd, Avs, Azione and three civic groups: 31.6%). The three thousand voters who voted for Sara Moretto’s centrist and civic coalition in the first round will decide the election. (Monica Zicchiero)
