LIVORNO – After the sensational escape, yesterday, of an inmate from the Sughera prison in Livorno – who escaped from the High Security Department of the prison after managing to climb the wall of the walkways and then reach the surrounding wall on the side of the construction site of the new department and climbed over it and disappeared, as the surrounding wall was not manned by the “sentinel” service -, the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union SAPPE requests an urgent meeting with the leaders of the DAP and the Ministry of Justice.
Donato Capece, general secretary of SAPPE, explains: “What is happening in prisons in recent weeks – including suicides, attacks, fights, escapes – is of unprecedented gravity and is the consequence of the infamous dismantling of prison security policies implemented in the past. The penitentiary system, for adults and minors, is crumbling more and more every day and is in absolute need of urgent interventions. For years, SAPPE has been reporting that the internal security of prisons has been destroyed by wicked measures such as dynamic surveillance and the open regime, the removal of Penitentiary Police surveillance sentries from the prison walls, the lack of staff of prison officers, the lack of funding for anti-intrusion and anti-climbing services. Yet, politics completely didn’t care.”
“Police operations are already underway to ensure the capture of the fugitive, of Campania origin, who I hope will be caught as soon as possible”, he concludes. “Let’s start again from this escape to put an end to the long wave of dismantling of penitentiary security policies implemented in the past. Dismantling the internal security of prisons with dynamic supervision, an open regime and the absence of Penitentiary Police has in fact inevitably favored critical events, which are constant and continuous”.
