Catanzaro – Voting operations have opened regularly in the three municipalities of Calabria involved in the run-off round for the municipal elections. These are Vibo Valentia, the only provincial capital of the region affected by the consultation, Montalto Uffugo and Gioia Tauro. In Vibo Valentia, Roberto Cosentino, director of the Calabria Region, is competing for the seat of mayor, supported by Forza Italia, Fratelli d’Italia, by the “Indipendenza” movement, founded by the former mayor of Rome Gianni Alemanno, and by the civic lists “Forza Vibo “, “Oltre” and “Vibo Unica”, and Enzo Romeo, a dentist by profession, who has the support of the Democratic Party, the Five Star Movement, the Green and Left Alliance and the “Progressives for Vibo” list.
Romeo was the first president of the Province of Vibo Valentia, established in 1992 together with that of Crotone. In the first round the most voted candidate was Cosentino, with 38.4%, while Romeo obtained 31.9%. The candidate of the center pole, the lawyer Franco Muzzopappa, who received 28.9 percent in the first round, has announced his support for Enzo Romeo. In Montalto Uffugo the mayoral candidates who reached the ballot are Biagio Faragalli, pharmacist and former municipal councilor, and Mauro D’Acri, former regional councilor with responsibility for Agriculture. Faragalli, in the first round, obtained 49%, while D’Acri stopped at 42.4%. In Gioia Tauro the contest is all female. In fact, the ballot pits two women, Simona Scarcella and Maria Rosaria Russo, both from the centre-right area. The former, who is a lawyer and works at the Port Authority, obtained 39.2% in the first round, while Maria Rosaria Russo, a school director, obtained 35.5%.
