The mayor of Cosenza, Franz Caruso, has intensified his efforts for the construction of the internal route of the Salerno-Reggio Calabria high-speed railway. Caruso recently met the Calabrian governor, Roberto Occhiuto, and flew to Rome to the Ministry of Transport to present a detailed technical report, already discussed with members of the local scientific committee.
During the hearing on 21 June, the mayor reiterated the need to use the internal route, highlighting the importance of Tarsia and Cosenza as the cornerstones of the programming. The project, supported by various mayors and local administrators, aims to ensure that the Bruzio capital and the surrounding localities are not excluded from the economic and social benefits deriving from the new infrastructure.
Caruso’s battle received the unanimous support of the participants at the discussion table held at Palazzo dei Bruzi. Present at the meeting were the mayors of Castrovillari, Domenico Lo Polito, and of Tarsia, Roberto Ameruso, as well as the councilor for public works of Cassano, Leonardo Sposato. Even if busy elsewhere, the mayors of Acri and San Marco Argentano have expressed their support for the cause.
Among the participants were also Demetrio Festa, Luigi Martirano and Giuseppe Lo Feudo, representatives of the technical component, together with professor Roberto Musmanno. The group underlined the strategic importance of the median route that passes through Tarsia, considered crucial for traffic flows from Sicily and Calabria towards the Adriatic corridor, and seen as a natural complement to the future construction of the Strait Bridge.
Franz Caruso emphasized how the choice of route cannot be reduced to a mere technical question, but must consider the strategic and unique importance of the work for the development of Calabria in the coming decades. The mayor of Cosenza firmly believes that high speed represents an unrepeatable opportunity for the economic and social growth of the region, which is why he insists on the construction of the internal route.
