Violent gusts of wind and hailstorms: bad weather gives Northern Italy no respite

The North Italy was hit yesterday and in the last few hours by a wave of bad weather which caused numerous damages and inconveniences in various regions. The Province of Bolzano, Lombardy and Piedmont were particularly affected, with strong downbursts and hailstorms that put the territory and infrastructure to the test.

Bolzano, downburst and widespread damage

The Autonomous Province of Bolzano experienced hours of apprehension due to the strong gusts of downburst, a meteorological phenomenon characterized by extremely intense winds which caused the fall of trees and widespread damage. The Fire Brigade intervened in around 200 operations to secure the affected areas and restore normality.

In the Cuneo area, hail and damage to crops

In the Cuneo area, violent hailstorms hit yesterday, particularly around 5.45pm. In Piozzo the hailstones reached 3-4 cm in diameter. Costigliole d’Asti, Santo Stefano Belbo and Mango in the Langhe were also affected, with significant damage to the Moscato bunches, a few months before harvesting.

Vigevano and Pavese, thunderstorms and hailstorms

TO They lived, shortly after 7pm, a strong hailstorm hit the area with medium-sized hailstones. Intense thunderstorms quickly affected Lower Piedmont and the Pavia area, rising towards the Milan area, the Bergamo area and the Alps/Pre-Alps, accompanied by winds of up to 80/90 km/h.

Also in Lombardy, the Lecco-Colico railway line suffered interruptions due to adverse weather conditions. Since 8.35pm last night, traffic has been suspended between Dervio and Bellano, with interventions by RFI technicians underway to free the line. Since 6:00 this morning, rail traffic has returned to normal after delays of up to 180 minutes for 10 regional and 3 limited trains.

Forecast

The weather conditions lead to a brief respite, with an improvement in the sky thanks to the passage of the front which swept away the Saharan dust. However, a new disturbance is expected between tonight and Sunday.
