Over the last two weeks, in Scalea and San Nicola Arcella, services have been carried out aimed at safeguarding compliance with legislation on the environment, work, preservation of food safety, protection of state-owned coastal areas and the cleanliness of marine waters facing the coastlines, carried out with the assistance of military operations by the Calabria Carabinieri Legion, the Maritime Directorate of Reggio Calabria and the Calabria Forestry Carabinieri Region. In particular, the Carabinieri of the Company of Scalea, of the Forestry Units of Scalea and Cetraro, of the Labor Inspectorate and Anti-adulteration and Health Units of Cosenza, together with personnel from the Maritime District Office of Maratea and with the specialized support of ARPACAL personnel, subjected under control were 3 purifiers, 4 livestock farms, 11 bathing establishments, 1 construction site, 5 wastewater collection tanks from as many condominium parks, 1 cement factory and 1 car dismantler.
During the operations the following were ascertained:
– the discharge of purified sewage waste with values outside the table and the compilation of the sewage sludge loading and unloading register with incomplete or inaccurate data;
– in some beaches, the absence of the safety equipment required by a specific ordinance of the Maritime District Office of Maratea, administrative offenses in the field of fishing and aquaculture with the administrative seizure of approximately 52 kg of non-traceable fish products, hygienic and health deficiencies and HACCP which also led to the closure of a room used for food storage;
– in a cement factory, violations of safety in the workplace and failure to store used oils in compliant containers.
Furthermore, 3 people were released into a state of freedom (the proceeding is still in the preliminary investigation phase therefore the suspects are to be considered presumed innocent until a definitive finding of guilt with an irrevocable sentence), namely the sole director of a company who had set up a construction site for the renovation of a private home, the owner of the latter and the director of works for multiple violations of the legislation on safety in the workplace and for having built without specific authorizations in an area with landscape and seismic constraint. The house was also subjected to seizure. As part of this last check, the presence of 3 workers who were not regularly employed was also verified.
Fines were imposed for a total of approximately €112,000.00, while no irregularities of any kind emerged in other controlled structures.
Finally, sampling was carried out in 3 purifiers and in 5 wastewater collection tanks by ARPACAL personnel with the aim of intercepting any polluting flows and planning, in a future perspective, further targeted controls.
