Antonino Minicucimunicipal councilor of the League of Reggio Calabria and candidate for mayor of the municipality in 2020, defeated in the run-off of those controversial elections won by the current mayor of the Democratic Party Giuseppe Falcomatàsent an open letter to the press this evening addressed to President of the City Council of Reggio Calabriato the majority municipal councillors and to the minority municipal councilor Crazy.
“Dear colleagues – he writes Mini sewing machines – I am addressing you at a time of great concern for our city. Reggio Calabria has been overwhelmed by a wave of scandals that have undermined citizens’ trust in the institutions. Recent investigations by the judiciary have brought to light mafia infiltration within our municipality and the arrival of a ministerial access commission to verify these very serious accusations now seems imminent. It is undeniable that this situation requires courageous and responsible actions on the part of those who, like you and us, have the task of representing citizens and protecting the common good. The presence of the ‘ndrangheta in local institutions cannot and must not be tolerated“.
“Even today, in the press, we read that an employee of the heritage sector of the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria, Francesco ARANITI, of the Araniti clan, known as “U Kin”, was arrested by the ROS, while the other key figure in the investigation Daniel Barilla’ , son-in-law of the boss Araniti, is under house arrest, also chosen to work in the municipality by FALCOMATA’. I also remind you that another Araniti worked in the Municipality and was fired by the previous General Secretary who left. There is, they tell me, in the Prosecutor’s Office, a sentence from the Calabria Regional Administrative Court, Reggio Calabria section, sent for the Sambatello landfill. The Access Commission will question the various councilors who approved the various acts and there could be serious consequences, pursuant to the Severino law, law 97/2001 articles 3 and 4 and d. Los 33/2023. Then there will be claims for compensation before the investigating judge, including mine, but above all that of the State Attorney’s Office, for millions of euros. “I therefore invite you to reflect deeply on the current situation and to consider the possibility of submitting your resignation. This gesture, however painful, would be an act of great responsibility and a strong signal of respect towards the citizens and institutions we represent. Resigning now would mean putting the collective interest before the defense of individual positions (seats) and contributing to re-establishing a climate of trust and legality. I am aware that this decision is not easy, but I am convinced that it is necessary for the good of Reggio Calabria. Our city needs to turn the page, rebuild its image and resume a path of development and legality. Your resignation, together with that of the opposition who, I remember, had presented a motion of no confidence in the Mayor at this moment, would represent an act of great courage and integrity“.
