TURIN The Piedmont Region has requested autonomy on all matters provided for by law. Governor Alberto Cirio did so in 2019, asking the government for an addition to the request of his predecessor Sergio Chiamparino, who had asked for 13 out of 23.

Piedmont’s request for differentiated autonomy started in September 2019 for all the competences provided for by articles 116 and 117 of the Constitution. Piedmont has also asked for greater powers on most of the 13 matters already indicated by the previous Administration.

«Strengthening our request for autonomy – Cirio stated on that occasion – was one of the first commitments of our government and now we want to join Lombardy and Veneto in claiming from Rome what we deserve. Piedmont made Italy and we have no intention of undoing it. We know that autonomy means responsibility.”

The request for new subjects concerned: foreign trade, research, justice of the peace, agriculture, hunting, sport, communication, savings banks and rural banks, production, energy, nutrition, as well as specific attention to the mountains. Greater powers were also requested on most of the matters covered by the predecessor’s request: among these, the power for the governor to issue ordinances in derogation of state legislation in the event of disasters.
