Sappe reports it: “The attack occurred when he was taken to hospital”
He swallows some batteries in his cell and, once he arrives at the San Paolo hospital, he attacks one of the officers of the Penitentiary Police escort.
The news was given by Maurizio Somma, secretary for Lazio of the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union.
“It happened today, when an inmate swallowed batteries and was then taken to hospital. When his handcuffs were removed for the visit, he lashed out, treacherously and without reason, against one of the men of the Penitentiary Police who were escorting him with scratches and two blows that broke his lip”.
“The intervention of the agents was immediate”, explains the trade unionist, “and the subject was blocked. Our praise goes to the men of the Penitentiary Police who are a shining example of commitment and dedication”.
For Donato Capece, “they were moments of great tension and danger, however managed with great courage and professionalism by the prison officers. The event was particularly critical because it took place in a hospital in the presence of other patients and family members but it was managed in the best possible way by the Penitentiary Police, who pay heavily in terms of stress and operations for these serious and continuous critical episodes.
Attacks, scuffles, injuries to staff, as well as brawls and attempted suicides, are unfortunately commonplace. It is important and urgent for us to envisage a new custodial model. It is necessary to intervene urgently to address the constant critical penitentiary issues.”
Finally, Capece denounces “the daily operational difficulties with which the Penitentiary Police units serving in prisons are confronted on a daily basis” and returns to denounce the daily and systematic use of medical visits in hospitals and medical centers outside the prison, with the simultaneous massive use of personnel escort belonging to the Penitentiary Police, due to the widespread presence of pathologies among the inmates: “And precisely for this reason, for the SAPPE it was a mistake to abolish penitentiary healthcare and delegate everything to the local health authorities”.
